Where ARE AUDITIONS?

In the Pacific Paradise School Hall.

Students will register and perform for the Casting Team and each other.

Parents should pack extra snacks for afternoon tea and pick up their children from the hall at 4:00pm. Only students who are auditioning for the show will be allowed in the hall during this time.  There will be no other supervision available for students who are not auditioning.

Audition Material

Audition information will be sent home in early Term 4, 2024. Ms Bonnie will distribute printouts with the words of the song and script of the scenes, for students to learn for their audition. These materials will also be emailed home digitally with links for students to be able to practice.

Ms Bonnie will also talk through the material with students in class so that they understand what is expected.

Students wishing to audition will be required to:

  • Perform a selection of a song from the show (not a whole song)

  • Act as a character in a scene from the show. (You will find a breakdown of all the characters at the end of this information.)

AUDITION TIPS - Familiarise yourself as much as possible with the story and characters. Make sure you research and read the play or watch the film to give yourself some context of the material and to get a sense of the world of the characters.

Show Dates and Commitment

If you are coming to auditions, you need to be serious about wanting to be in the school musical as it is a big commitment.

Before you audition, you must ensure that you will be available for ALL show dates next year!

Show dates are:

  1. Wednesday, 30th July 2025
  2. Thursday, 31st July 2025
  3. Friday, 1st August 2025

Rehearsals will begin from the start of 2025 and will be considered compulsory.

Students involved in the show will have one morning rehearsal each week before school, as well as Monday afternoon rehearsals after school.

There will also be some additional weekend rehearsals in the lead up to show week.

Details of all required rehearsals will be explained in full in the Performer Contract, which will be given to students and parents to sign if offered a role in the show.

Important information

Students interested in a main role will be asked to audition individually.

We do encourage everyone to try and find their brave and audition on their own. If you don't want to audition by yourself that's fine, on audition day please tell the Casting Team that you would like to audition for the Ensemble only.

Call-backs are generally to see students again who we may wish to read for other roles. If you do not receive a call back, don't worry! It doesn't mean you won't be cast in the show. The Casting Team will put students in the role/ensemble group that we feel best suits their skills.

Please understand that while we hate for people to miss out on participating in a show, sometimes we simply can't include everyone as too huge a cast is difficult for our team to manage.

Casting notes

Sometimes it isn't just about how well you audition, it also has to do with you being suited to the part or not. We always work to give our show the best chance of success. We want everyone in our show to Shine Bright on the stage and do our best to make it a great experience for the entire cast. No matter your role be prepared to work hard and HAVE FUN!

We are interested in your:

  • Individual interpretation of the text and character.
  • Vocal and physical potential.
  • Ability to take direction.
  • Sense of play.
  • Willingness to connect with the other actors in the space.

Be yourself. Be bold. Have fun. Treat the audition like a great workshop experience.

Please have a look at the many different roles below that we are looking to cast in Elf Jr.

ELF JR ROLE DESCRIPTIONS

Santa Claus

Santa Claus has a lot on his plate during the Christmas season, and it is starting to show. He is annoyed with the Elves, tired of lying to Buddy and sad that people seem to be losing their Christmas spirit. He is still the same jolly old St. Nick underneath it all, but the job is getting to him. This is a great role for a character performer who can play an older (and somewhat cranky) man while trying hard to keep his holiday spirit.

Buddy

Buddy is the perfect elf! He's good-natured, he means well, and he's happy all the time. There's only one problem. He's not an elf, he's an adult human.

Elves

The Elves are Santa's special helpers who love their job making toys to meet their Christmas Eve deadline. These roles are great for younger performers, or for those who can embody a youthful spirit, enjoy singing and work well together as a group.

Charlie

Charlie is in charge of monitoring the other Elves, making sure every present is wrapped and every bow is tied. Cast a young performer with a good speaking voice, someone who is comfortable taking command of the stage and has authority over the rest of the Elves, but always remains friendly.

Shawanda

Shawanda is a dependable and caring elf. She will do whatever she can to help out others, including Buddy, even though she accidentally reveals that he is a human.

Sam

Sam is one of Walter's Office Staff who is in a bind at the top of the show.

Walter Hobbs

Walter Hobbs, Buddy s real father, is so focused on keeping his job that he is not making time for his family. He can be stern and unemotional at times, but ultimately, he learns to recommit to his family.

Deb

Deb, Walter's secretary, has the big responsibility of keeping her boss and the whole office happy. She does this by sharing her positive attitude with everyone. This is a plum role for a young woman with a pleasant demeanor, yet efficient work ethic, who is a solid actor with a good speaking voice.

Emily Hobbs

Emily Hobbs is Walter's devoted wife who would prefer her husband to spend a little more time at home. She is a problem solver and an excellent mother who is doing everything she can to provide a positive family dynamic.

Michael Hobbs

Michael Hobbs is the smarter-than-average 12-year-old son of Walter and Emily. He quickly befriends his new adult brother, Buddy, and does everything he can to make sure Buddy becomes a permanent part of the family

Security Guards

Security Guard #1 and Security Guard #2 are a stern duo from Walter's office, making sure everyone who enters has permission.

Saleswoman

The Saleswoman is the first person to greet Buddy as he enters Macys. She's the consummate sales person: smiling, overfriendly, and always trying to sell something.

Manager

The manager is a terrific featured acting role for a performer with good comedic timing. As the manager of Macys, he's doing everything he can to make sure all the employees stay in line.

Jovie

Jovie works as a store elf at Macy's, but don't be mistaken, she doesn't quite exude the Christmas spirit. She is kind of cynical, a bit tough around the edges, and now the target of Buddy's complete adoration. This is a fantastic role for a young woman with a strong singing voice and acting chops.

Santa's Helper

Santa's Helper works as a Macy's Employee and announces when each kid gets to visit with Santa.

Fake Santa

Fake Santa is a poor replacement for the real Santa. He is an employee of Macy's who is a bit rough around the edges. Fake Santa should be played by a performer who is unafraid of being a little over-the-top and has good physical control of his body.

Policemen

Policeman #1 and Policeman #2 are a friendly pair of cops who return Buddy to the Hobbs household.

Sarah

Sarah is a staff member at Walter's office. This is a nice role for a less experienced actor with a good singing voice.

Mr. Greenway

Mr. Greenway is one of the crankiest businessmen around. He is the big boss, so look for an older student with a commanding presence to tackle this acting role.

Chadwick and Matthews

Chadwick and Matthews are staff members at Walter's office who are doing everything they can think of to save the day and make their boss happy.

Charlotte Dennon

Charlotte Dennon is a TV reporter with a big personality. She does her best to keep her professional persona in public and doesn't like being shown up. This is a great role for a young woman with professional charisma and someone who can make strong acting choices.

Finale Soloists

Finale Soloists #1,#2,#3 and #4 are good roles to highlight four of your strong solo singers.

Darlene Lambert and Emma Van Brocklin

Darlene Lambert and Emma Van Brocklin are on the scene in Central Park and are convinced of Santa's magic after Buddy reveals their past Christmas gifts.

Ensemble

The Ensemble, including New Yorkers, Comforting New Yorker, Macy's Employees, Macy's Employee #1, Members of the Rockefeller Crowd, Office Staff, Businesswoman, Flyer Guys, Teenager, Jogger, Carollers, Passer-by, Children and Parents are important roles for creating the distinct worlds of the North Pole and New York City.

 AUDITION MATERIAL

Students are required to perform the song selection and also read as a character from one of the scripts below.

1.     Click on the Video Link 1 to view the YouTube Guide vocal to practice the song.

  • Please sing with expression and acting.
  • We want to hear you sing the section from 40 sec to 1:25 only!

2.     Make sure you practice with just the backing track in Video Link 2

  • We will ask you to perform with the backing track only so that we know we can hear you sing without any help.
  • Please note: Most of you will need to sing up the Octave from the voice in the first video, as he is an adult male and you are kids!

3.     Pick a script from the scenes and a character.

  • Learn the lines to act at the audition.
  • The better you know it, the easier you will be able to act it out
